Ant Sanford has quit the hustle. He was never a major player in Memphis's illegal drug trade, but he's still leaving the streets behind to pursue a lifelong dream. And after a harrowing experience during a police raid, Ant truly decides he's had enough. He has designs on living a legitimate life, and his desire to do so only strengthens once he meets the lovely Tuffy Shaw.

Tuffy is a smart, sexy, gorgeous hairdresser who's also looking to make changes in her life. She starts by dumping her slimy boyfriend. And when one of the city's most notorious gangsters offers to fund the opening of her beauty shop, Tuffy accepts the terms. But at what cost?

When Ant and Tuffy meet, sparks immediately fly. Yet the ghosts of their pasts won't stop haunting them. Ant's childhood friend Cornelius is trying to lure him back into the game. Ex-flame Reid attempts to force his way back into Tuffy's life. And what of the beautiful yet psychotic enforcer Gigi Garcia? Everyone's paths will eventually cross, and nothing will ever be the same again.

Inspired by the Memphis, Tennessee, neighborhood in which JAY FINGERS grew up, and brimming with drama, romance, humor, and suspense, ORANGE MOUND is a quirky, irreverent take on the genre of urban fiction.

Orange Mound A Novel edition by Jay Fingers Literature Fiction eBooks

This book had me at hello. Truly. Usually it takes me about a chapter or two to really get into a story, but this one grabbed me right away. It was a fast-paced thrill ride through a Memphis community that I was not familiar with. The characters who reside in Orange Mound are deftly layered, some with sweetness and others with acid.

I was rooting for the protagonist something fierce. Ant is not unlike many men who grow up in tough surroundings, as he falls in with guys who don't measure up to his potential, but before you strive, you must survive and that he does.

As likable as Ant and his love interest Tuffy are, Cornelius and Gigi made my blood turn cold. In fact, Gigi reminded me of one of my favorite characters from the show Prison Break that I loved to hate, Gretchen! Whew, this chick was cold!

If you're looking for a book that you can devour like candy and savor like a stiff drink, I throughly recommend this tale. It has teeth!

Also, the author must be a major foodie because his descriptions of food made me hungry while reading.

Due to the ending, which I won't give away, I'm wondering if we will see these characters again. I certainly hope so!

Orange Mound A Novel edition by Jay Fingers Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

This story follows the life of Ant, a man on a mission to leave the hustle game for good. He has big plans to start his own business only to find himself faced with a few dilemmas. I loved how the author was able to capture the essence of the neighborhood and surroundings taking me on a mental trip. I rated Orange Mound a 4 only because the language used was a bit off putting for an urban fiction read. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone interested in being entertained.
This is an urban tale about a guy whose nickname, Ant, tells you he dislikes Anthony or he’s an underwhelming fellow. He spends much of his time hanging out with friends and uses the bus for transportation because his car is junk. He starts off in the drug trade, is busted, and decides to take his stash and open a soul food restaurant, something he’s wanted to do since high school. The novel is basically about his attempt to achieve this goal, in the course of which he must overcome a series of obstacles, complications, and betrayals to get there alive in a neighborhood filled with unsavory characters. Dark story with few likeable characters.
When you combine elements like revenge, suspicion, love, struggle and the desire for a better life, you are basically combining the simple ingredients that make Orange Mound so entertaining. Set in a gritty neighborhood of Orange Mound, located in Memphis, TN, the story follows very recently retired hustler Ant Sanford as he tries to live behind a life of the streets and focus on a legitimate career to better himself. Ant is supported in the story telling by a very compelling cast of characters, some very scary and some very comical, who add depth to the story and engage the reader to actually care about the outcome. Jay's development of the characters works to the story's advantage, because he shows different sides of everyone's true nature, sometimes leaving you skeptical of who the true hero and the true villain is. I would recommend this book to everyone, as it is highly engaging and very entertaining from the start to it's shocking finish.
ENTERTAINING, WITTY, INTENSE, AND DYNAMIC!!!!!!!!!!!

I would definitely recommend Orange Mound to everyone in a heartbeat even my mother!!!! It is a well written novel that deserves to be on a bestselling list. It is filled with twists and turns and the ending left me speechless. And that's almost impossible to do!

Orange Mound is an inspiring yet gritty tale that I got lost in. It is a thought provoking novel that had me thinking "what would I do if I was in that situation"? Would I take the high road or take the easy way out? We are all faced with challenges and Orange Mound explores the complexities of overcoming what is thrown our way. It explores the different routes that people choose and shows the consequences of taking those routes.

The characters pull you in and you feel like you know them personally. You root for the good guys and hate the bad guys with a passion. I think there is at least one character in the book that someone can relate to the person trying to make a better life for themselves, the person struggling with inner demons, the person who thinks they will never find love, or the person who is trying to leave his/her past behind.

Don't walk....run and order this book today, I guarantee you will enjoy it as much as I did!
Can't wait until part two.
I loved the story and how all the character's plot lines were weaved in and out of each other. I would highly recommend this book and look forward to more stories from this author.
Awesome story with compelling characters. Jay Fingers' best book yet! Highly recommended. I look forward to reading his next one.
